Ed Fish is co-founder and Managing Director of Tech+IP Capital, which recently spun out of Houlihan Lokey to empower clients with additional tools to help them realize tangible value from intangible assets.
A recognized global leader in building and realizing value from innovation and intellectual property, Mr. Fish’s 30-year career includes experience as an Investment Banker, Technology Company Executive and Board member, Entrepreneur, Inventor and IP Attorney.
Most recently Mr. Fish was Managing Director and Co-Head of Houlihan Lokey’s Tech+IP Advisory practice, where he specialized in IP and Advanced Technology transactions, and strategic and Board advisory work, helping clients conduct over a $1BN in IP-related transactions. Previously, Mr. Fish was a Senior Managing Director at BSIP, LLC, a boutique investment bank focused on valuing and trading IP, which was acquired by Houlihan Lokey in January 2017. In addition, Mr. Fish has served as a board member and President at digital rights management and IP licensing pioneer InterTrust Technologies Corp (NAS: ITRU; IPO 1999; sold to Sony/Philips for $453 million in 2003); as President and CEO at social education company ePals Corp. (now Cricket Media, TSX:CKT). At the height of the internet boom he served as a Senior Vice President, Premium Services, and Senior Vice President, Instant Messaging, at AOL, where he ran both AIM and ICQ with over 100 million monthly users, a global leader at the time. At AOL he also managed/launched more than a dozen services in the Digital Music (AOL MusicNet, MusicNow and Winamp), Education (Step By Step Math, Study Buddy) and Security/PC Management spaces, as these businesses created entirely new products and technologies. Mr. Fish’s experience in private and public market fund raising, includes assisting his own Companies with raising over $US300M and IPOs and follow-on offerings in the US and Canada.
Earlier in his career, Fish practiced law in the New York and Silicon Valley offices of international law firm Weil Gotshal & Manges, where he specialized in patent/IP transactions. After law school he served as a law clerk for Chief Judge Howard Markey on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the court that exclusively hears all patent appeals in the United States. Mr. Fish earned a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Marquette University and a J.D. magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from Wayne State University. He is a registered patent attorney and is FINRA registered (Series 79, 63, and SIE).
Mr. Fish is a named inventor on 33 issued US patents (and many more pending) in such diverse fields as presence and instant messaging, social networking, online gaming, mobile computing, search, and collaborative learning. Many of those patents are fundamental to those areas, and are now assigned to, among others, AOL, Facebook, Google, and Cricket Media
